Confidential information is the backbone of every company.
They enable innovation, secure competitive advantages and create trust - both internally and externally.
The protection of technical, organizational and commercial data is of central importance to ensure that this trust is not jeopardized.
In this lesson, you will learn why confidentiality is so important, what consequences violations can have - and how to behave correctly in your day-to-day work.
Obligation to maintain confidentiality
As an employee, you are obliged to maintain confidentiality about all technical, organizational and commercial information and data that you become aware of or have become aware of during your employment.
This obligation applies regardless of whether the information was provided verbally, in writing or digitally, and is a key part of your responsibility to the company. Why is confidentiality so important? The confidentiality of company information is crucial in order to:
- ensure the integrity of operational processes,
- to protect competitive advantages,
- avoid legal and economic risks,
- and to maintain the trust of our partners, customers and employees.
What happens in the event of a breach? Failure to comply with the duty of confidentiality can have serious consequences. These include, among other things
- Disciplinary measures
- Warning
- Termination
- Dismissal
- Civil law consequences
- Claims for damages - also by third parties
- Consequences under criminal law
- Imprisonment of up to one year
- Fine of up to 720 daily rates
- Compliance consequences for the company
- Fines of up to 10% of the consolidated annual turnover
